Test Driving Tips for Used Motorcycles

The best way to ensure a used motorcycle is still in good shape is to give it a quick test ride. However, you don’t want to just hop on your model, take it around the block, and assume everything is fine. Mechanical issues can sometimes be hard to spot, and we recommend reading our guide below to ensure you know exactly what to look for on your upcoming motorcycle test drive.

Prep

To successfully test ride a used motorcycle, you’ll first need to set up an appointment with the dealership to ride the model. Before your appointment, be sure to request that the model is not started before you arrive, so you can check that the bike has no issues starting up or idling and doesn’t release any suspicious-looking smoke from the exhaust. You’ll also need to make sure you have all of your riding gear—such as your helmet, motorcycle boots, and jacket— when you arrive for your test drive. 

Driving

If the used motorcycle starts normally with no signs of underlying issues, you’re welcome to hop into the seat and take it for a spin. However, while you do, be sure to change gears regularly, shifting into high gear at a lower speed at some point during your ride. If you hear the transmission making grinding or clunking sounds, or notice delayed accelerations, it’s a sign the model may have some serious transmission issues. You’ll also want to keep a close eye out for any grinding, shrieking, or shaking when you brake, as it’s a sign important parts and components will need to be replaced sooner rather than later.
